The Tree Archive

In Toronto, trees on private land with a trunk diameter of 30cm or greater are protected by a permitting process. This threshold is a tool for valuing mature trees in our city, which we have used as a metric to investigate a sample of locally cut trees. Wood was sorted into two stacks, above or below 30cm in diameter, and randomly selected logs were printed onto paper, recording the shape and number of annual rings. After printing, the inked logs were split, and returned to the wood pile. The prints of the tree rings were displayed at the Small Arms Inspection Building as part of the 2022 edition of the Mississauga Festival of Trees, produced by CreativeHub 1352. The prints are available to view at https://www.instagram.com/the_tree_archive/.
